OCT presented prize-winning Welsh dramatist Charles Way’s children’s play Merlin and the Cave of Dreams  at the Savoy.

Jain Boon directed the show, which was first produced in 2004 at the Library Theatre in Manchester. It took us on a journey from the bleak, cold and inhospitable Britain of the sixth century AD to the shores of Avalon where the young Arthur met giants and dragons in his quest to discover his own destiny as king.

Off Centre found some of the brightest and best new talent in Monmouth. Co-director Stephanie Harris said, “We have discovered some extremely talented young performers who will certainly amaze Monmouth audiences.” The young players presented a fascinating and enthralling story, and an adventurous production which was a first-off for OCT.

Charles Way, based in Abergavenny, has written more than 40 plays, many of them for young people, performed all over the world. Merlin was shortlisted in the USA for the Helen Hayes award for the 'Outstanding New Play of 2004'. His long association with many Welsh Theatres includes In the Bleak Midwinter, and Ill Met by Moonlight, set on the Welsh borders.  Of special interest is Bordertown, the story of Monmouth, and A Song Of Streets, a major community production in Cardiff for the Welsh National Opera.
